Nicaragua, nicknamed the land of lakes and volcanoes for its 19 volcanoes and many lakes, including Lake Nicaragua, the biggest lake in Central America, is located in Central America between Honduras and El Salvador to the North, Costa Rica to the South, the Pacific Ocean to the West and the Caribbean Sea to the East. The country covers 119,990 kilometers2 of land and 10,380 kilometers2 of water, making it the 98th largest country in the world.
Nicaragua gained its independence from Spain on September 15 1821 and like most countries colonised by Spain, Nicaragua’s main spoken language is Spanish. As of 2012, the population of Nicaragua, referred to as Nicaraguans, was 5,727,707, with its capital Managua, accounting for almost 1,000,000 people. The currency of Nicaragua is called the Cordoba (NIO) and the dialing code for the country is 505.
